What is a smoke alarm?

A smoke alarm is a self contained device that incorporates a means of detecting a fire or smoke and giving an audible alarm. It will detect a fire in the very early stages giving you precious minutes to enable you to safely evacuate your home or premises. Firemart range are ionisation smoke alarms. An ionisation alarm works by detecting small particles of smoke produced by flaming fires and will detect and alert you to the smoke before it becomes too thick. Please note that Firemart smoke alarms are operated by battery only and are not suitable for connection to mains power sources.

Where to use the smoke alarm?

Our alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are suitable for both domestic and industrial purposes. The alarms are simply screwed into a ceiling and should be fitted towards the centre of the room where possible and located away from walls and light fittings. You should fit a smoke alarm where you will be able to hear it throughout your property. In the home, you should fit at least one alarm per level and make sure that it will be audible in the bedroom when you are asleep. Within the home, they are suitable for use in bedrooms, hallways, stairs, landings, lofts, living rooms and dining rooms. They should not be used in kitchens or bathrooms or other places that may cause frequent activation.

Why protect against carbon monoxide?

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a silent killer. It is an invisible, odourless, tasteless deadly gas. Because you can't see, taste or smell it, CO can kill you before you are aware that it is present. Today's energy-efficient airtight homes contribute to the problem by trapping CO-polluted air inside the home. When CO is breathed in through the lungs, it bonds with the hemoglobin in the blood, producing a toxic compound called carbohaemoglobin (COHb). COHb produces flu-like symptoms including headaches, fatigue, nausea and dizzy spells. As levels of COHb rise, victims suffer vomiting, loss of consciousness and eventually brain damage and could lead to death. Please note that Firemart smoke alarms/carbon monoxide testers are operated by battery only and ARE NOT SUITABLE for connection to mains power sources.

Potential sources of carbon monoxide include a clogged chimney flue, wood or gas fireplace, wood burning stove, gas or oil burners, gas appliances and paraffin heaters.
